Can I get weird for a second?
I love you guys.
I've had a week that has been equal parts stupid sucktastic (Boyfriend turning into ex-Boyfriend) and gloriously disgustingly vom-inducingly perfect (watching bestie's almost-husband cry when she walked down the aisle... after the flower girl tried to marry him first). But I've been surprisingly okay, and a lot of that has to do with a bunch of people I've never even met. HEY THAT'S YOU GUYS. Your comments and e-mails and tweets and general fking awesomeness have meant so much to me and I can never ever EVER thank you guys enough for being so nice. If you ever doubt for a second what kind words can do for a person's day, come on back and I'll remind you.

In other news, I was mistaken for a bear today. Le shit doth happen.

Drop some knowledge bombs on me: how do you guys watch TV without cable? I really don't feel like blowing $150 (this seems like money better spent on shoes...) a month for channels I barely use, so I'm going to basic cable. Reasons why this is a problem: Game of Thrones, Homeland, What Not To Wear, HGTV generally. I can stream a ton of stuff from Amazon Instant Video (hello, every season of Say Yes to the Dress and West Wing!!), but beyond that I'm stumped.

  1. Sam, your red lipstick is gorgeous! And you certainly do not look like a bear :) When I'm at school (2/3 of the year) and don't have cable, I watch a lot of my favorite shows with Hulu. You can also find a lot of show's episodes on their network's websites for free :) You might have to watch them a few days later but hey, that's better than nothing!

    1. Hahaha thanks girl! I mean I felt fairly bear like. Not entirely a bad thing :) I just bought a blu-ray player (selling my old dvd player) that comes with three free months of Hulu, so I'm stoked to try it!

  2. just found your blog via fran's & really love your style, wit & grace! when i lived alone i got rid of cable to save $ and invested in a roku to stream netflix thru my tv, i am always trying to find a new / old tv show to get hooked on-- hulu+ gets you most shows the week they air too. those subscriptions are a much smaller investment!

i will definitely be stopping back by your blog!

  3. I don't have cable, so when I was on vacation with the family last week, I couldn't turn HGTV off. Now I'm playing the SIMS to fill the void. You have a fantastic blog and I look forward to your future posts!

  5. I don't get TV without cable. As in, it doens't make sense to my brain. So we've loaded our TV up with pretty much every channel we can find (other than the creepy ones), and added Netflix on top of that. God forbid should we ever have 30 seconds without 786 options to turn to on our TV. Also, just in case I'm forced to work when the best re-run of What Not To Wear comes on, we have the DVR. My house is like an amusement park for grown-ups.

Now about this outfit. I love it. I love the red lips and the white and the fur. If looking like a bear is wrong then I don't want to be right. I just want to be Sam, inside her fur vest. <3

    1. Also, I think Netflix is honestly just $10 a month. The movies on there kind of suck, but they've got a decent number of good shows on there!

    2. I thought I would use the DVR way more than I do! I always forget it's there! It's going to be hard, but until I figure out a way to lay money eggs I've got to cut back somewhere. And it's sure as hell not going to be clothes! ;) Wish me luck!!

  6. I am mentally jumping up in down with excitement over this outfit Sam -- the winter white under the fur vest looks SO. GOOD. and the red lip is such a simple pop of color but really makes everything look sophisticated and complete. I don't have to tell you this because obviously you know as our 30 for 30 princess (you said Kendi was the queen, so can I call you the princess? Okay let's go with it). If this is only day four I cannot waitttt to see what else you have in store for us :)

Btw, I read your interview on Fran's blog (thanks for pointing me in the right direction - loving her page) and I have to share with you that I stumbled across your blog through a linkup before I had decided to start my own and was just completely blown away by how wonderful your blog was; you were (and still are) so funny and your outfits were gorgeous and your pictures came out beautifully -- I was so surprised to learn that you take them all yourself. I'll stop singing your praises before this turns into an embarrassingly long declaration of love but you truly are lovely, lady, and I am so grateful to you for hosting this challenge, putting yourself out there and encouraging others to do the same.

  7. Love the fur vest---it's the perfect combo of warm and stylish.

We don't have cable---just a Roku in the bedroom and an Apple TV in the living room. We subscribe to Netflix and Hulu Plus, and then if there's a show we both really love that doesn't "air" on Hulu, we'll buy the season on Amazon Instant Watch. I think we've just done that for "Sons of Anarchy" and "How I Met Your Mother". Yes, it's pricey for one show, but we pay less in a year for TV than most people spend in 2 months. We also rent movies on Amazon, since Redbox never ever winds up being "just $1".

    1. Love fur. The fake kind anyway :) I've been considering Apple TV since I'm a Mac girl, but I have an Amazon Prime membership and it won't play through Apple TV. Your Redbox comment made me seriously laugh out loud - I have NEVER spent $1 on any Redbox movie. Ever.

  10. I'm a huge fan of Netflix...but I'm afraid to get rid of cable because of my sports package. We watch a lot of sports at home...and to move all of the sports watching to a bar would NOT be good for my figure...or my wallet!

Love this outfit - I've been craving a vest like this but haven't found the right one yet. I wish I could find one at a thrift store!

  11. Aw, I love the blogging community! It is kind of weird how people I've never met can make me smile so much!

I haven't had cable for several years, and I really don't miss it. So many shows are available to stream online, or I just wait until the whole season is available on Netflix. For some shows, like Walking Dead, I just bought the season on iTunes. The episodes are available the next day to download, so it's not too bad. I feel kind of ridiculous paying a few bucks per episode, but it's way more cost effective than paying $50/month or more for Cable.

    1. It is SO WEIRD but SO AWESOME at the same time. I never ever dreamed you guys would be so stinking cool.

I sort of forgot about iTunes til I got all of your suggestions! I hate waiting a long time to catch the most recent episode, so I'm sure I'll buy some eps on iTunes when I have to have them soon.

  12. Cable means that I can put on the shittiest shows (in my husband's opinion) in order to torture him for blaring Call of freaking Duty all over the house. Ah, marriage. In all honesty, he wants all of the bells and whistles because he's a dude. I'd probably be content with Dora the Explorer if it meant I had some background noise while I peruse the interwebs for clothing that I cannot afford.

Speaking of clothes, I wish that I could pull off the fur vest trend. You make it look so lovely. In other news, I am preeeetty sure I have that sweater sitting in my F21 virtual shopping basket. If I click the buy button, I'm going to blame you because why would I ever blame my lack of will power?

Two things: buy the sweater (size up? I did) and don't give up on fur! You just have to find the right one. Personally, I wish this one were a few inches shorter, so I may have it tailored once the month is up.

As far as TV without Cable goes, I've been without Cable for close to 2 years now. I have a Boxee Box with Over the Air Antenna, and I get the locals. Then I use another service to *cough* download *cough* the shows that we don't get, and watch them through the Boxee or on the computer. Who needs TV when you can get the exact same thing from the internet??!!

    1. Awwww! That's so freaking sweet. You can stay! Hahaha. That's so how I feel about cable! I'm really only nervous about sports - it turns out I can find most of my shows online or on a cheap subscription service.

      Delete
    2. I was worried about sports too. Depending on what teams you're looking for, there are a few good sites out there to watch them, live, for free.

My favorite team is never on TV in my area, so I'm always watching them online (for free, though I did donate to the person who streams the games).

Anyway...keep your head up beautiful! You never know when the right guy will walk into a wall because he can't keep his eyes off you. ;-)

    2. I live in France (American expat) so I am DYING over here without my US TV shows, but Hulu and Netflix have a lot of great stuff. Hulu has most stuff for free, which is great. For the premium stuff like Homeland and Game of Thrones, sometimes you can find it on YouTube if you're fast (they get taken down quickly) or if you subscribe to the Reddit subgroups about them, sometimes people will post places where you can watch or download them. Otherwise you can download them off of iTunes (maybe you can go in with another friend who is trying to cut back on TV and alternate buying episodes). Also a lot of channels (HGTV) put their shows up online to watch, too.

You picked out some chic pieces for this challenge and cannot wait to see outfit after outfit. I also left you some other comments in your latest posts.

So far, this one and the Boucle Jacket/White Dress outfits are my favorites. I love the cozy knit white sweater here paired with the fur vest. Great Statement Necklace, too. Plus, red lips look great ANYTIME!!

    1. Thanks girl! I'm going ca-ray-zay with the lipstick lately. Stepping out of my comfort zone one tube at a time!! Funny that you mention the dryer - I had a sweet fur bedspread in high school, but my mom washed it and dried it and it turned into the WORST matted down thing ever. It was awful!

I'm looking at Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime or some combination of them. I think it's going to go well!

  22. I have subscriptions to Netflix instant and Hulu plus which cost about $10 a month each. Netflix has full series on there and gets old seasons added as the new seasons start, so it's good for older shows and stuff that isn't currently on TV. Hulu is great because it has current TV shows and current seasons, but it usually takes about a week to get the most recent episode uploaded to the site. You might hate me for this as a fellow lawyer, but for things I just HAVE TO WATCH THE DAY THEY COME OUT (i.e. homeland, dexter, vampire diaries.. my guilty pleasure) I bootleg download from megashare.info . SUE ME!

  24. We just cut down our cable package too...it's a ridiculous amount of money to pay and we don't even watch all the channels! Sadly, the downgrade meant no more Bravo, TLC or Style Network, but we got an Amazon Prime membership so we can watch movies/TV shows that I may miss (or use Hulu). We even got a connector that lets us use the Internet on the TV so we don't have to watch episodes from a laptop either. The savings is SO worth it...we are still saving $500+ a year which I say should go to clothes! :-)
